Climate Smart Communities Initiative Project

In August of 2026, the Town of Winthrop, Washington and Fire Adapted Methow (FAM) were awarded a Climate Smart Communities Initiative (CSCI) Grant for over $100,000 to support wildfire resilience planning and climate action in their community, in partnership with The Keystone Concept (TKC). Between August 2026 through July 2027, the Town of Winthrop and Fire Adapted Methow will work together with TKC and community stakeholders to develop a Wildfire Resilience Toolkit and invest funding in on-the-ground wildfire mitigation activities in and around the town.

The Town of Winthrop is one of only 28 communities awarded funding through CSCI in 2026 who is investing over $3 million to support critical climate action in large cities and small towns across the United States. Over the course of the next year TKC, Winthrop and Fire Adapted Methow will partner with invested community stakeholders to:

• Develop a collaborative Wildfire Resilience Toolkit

• Support three wildfire mitigation pilot projects in and adjacent to the town

• Build on existing partnerships and collaboration to address the rising risk of wildfire in this region of North Central Washington State
